OTTAWA (Oct. 19, 2025) - On Wednesday night, the Carleton Ravens women's hockey team met early-season adversity as they faced the Top 10-ranked Ottawa Gee-Gees. Despite some early-season injuries, the Ravens' offence gave them a chance before they fell 6-3.
The Ravens begin the season 0-3, but not without some positives. Despite the loss, Carleton's offence finally found some momentum after a pair of difficult games against favourites Waterloo and Toronto. Hayden Serniuk's first goal of the season late in the first cut into the Gee-Gees' lead, sending Carleton into the break down 2-1.
Gillian Warren would beat Ella Grad early in the second to renew the two-goal lead, but Erica Buckley gave the Ravens hope when she cut the deficit in half just after the midway mark in the period. Penalty woes would get the best of Carleton the rest of the way. During their third consecutive penalty kill in the second period, Alex Ferguson would add another for the Gee-Gees, before Mollie Heighinton made it 5-2 after forty.
The two teams would exchange goals in the third, with Ottawa scoring again on the power play, to make the final 6-3. In just her second career OUA start, Ella Grad stopped 29 of 35 shots faced.
"I don't think we started on time in two periods," acknowledged coach Stacey Collarossi. "We allowed two quick goals to start the first and second, and that's a big challenge. We have to be ready to go and ready to play at the drop of the puck."
Despite the loss, coach Colarossi saw positives in the Ravens' play. "That being said, they kept their heads down, they didn't pout about it, and kept grinding," she said after the game. "We got that power play opportunity at the end with the pulled goalie. And, I think we were rolling. In the third period, we played a really good game of hockey and got settled in, but it took us a bit to get settled in today."
The Ravens will need to continue with that momentum as they head out on the road for the first time this season. The Ravens will start their weekend in Oshawa on Friday against Ontario Tech before heading to Toronto for an afternoon matinee with the Varsity Blues.
The Ravens finally return home when they host York on Friday, October 31, 2025, at 7:00 PM.
