The Carleton Ravens men's hockey team had two dramatically different nights over the weekend, falling 5-1 to UQTR on Saturday before rallying to beat Nipissing 2-1 in overtime Sunday.
The Patriotes dominated the opening 40 minutes on Saturday, holding Carleton to only five shots through two periods while building a 3-0 lead. Charles Beaudoin scored twice, and Charles-Antoine Pilotte had the other as the Pats quickly pulled away. Ravens starter Tye Austin had to leave the game after the Patriotes third goal, bringing in transfer Dylan Meilun. Austin allowed three goals on 18 shots before leaving the game.
Thomas Auger scored twice to start the third before Braeden Virtue got Carleton on the board. Virtue's third of the year came too late for the Ravens as they fell 5-1 to the best team in the OUA East.
The Carleton Ravens recovered from a second straight slow start on Saturday, after generating only four shots in the first period. With Meilun making nine saves in the first, the Ravens were able to enter the intermission and reset.
With fresh ice, Carleton carried much of the second period, generating scoring chances and outshooting the Lakers. Despite being the better team, a Nipissing goal just six seconds into a power play was the difference as the Lakers led 1-0 after 40 minutes.
Disciplined play from the Ravens saw them earn three straight power plays in the third, with Nick McCarry capitalizing on the third, releasing a wrister through traffic that beat Zach Roy to tie the game. Carleton would outshoot Nipissing 14-5 in the third while killing off a late penalty and forcing overtime.
In the extra frame, Majid Kaddoura played the hero. The 2022-23 Colonel By Classic overtime hero, Kaddoura, picked up a loose puck to the right of Roy and wrapped it around behind the net, using his long reach to beat everyone to the back post. The game winner is just Kaddoura's second of his OUA career and first since January of 2023.
The Ravens now head on the road this weekend for a single game at Queen's. They return home on Friday, November 28, to host Concordia before facing Ottawa in the 2025 Colonel By Classic on Saturday, November 29.
