The Carleton Ravens women's basketball team captured their fifth straight Capital Hoops Classic victory on Friday with an impressive 87-60.
Kyana-Jade Poulin and Jacqueline Urban each had 10 points in a back-and-forth first quarter that saw Carleton lead 20-19 after 10 minutes. The second quarter was more of the same with both teams battling for every inch, as Carleton was unable to extend their lead, leading by just one at the break.
The Gee-Gees would get 9 of their 10 third-quarter points from Allie McCarthy, but the Ravens' depth was on full display as four players had five or more points, including six points from Catherine Oliver. The game marked Oliver's return after suffering a severe knee injury late in 2024.
The Ravens extended their lead by 19 in the third quarter, scoring 29 points. The story of the quarter and the game, was Kyana-Jade Poulin. The Ravens' veteran guard set a women's Capital Hoops Classic record with 28 points while scoring a triple-double with 11 assists and 11 rebounds. The 11 assists also tied a Classic record set by Ottawa's Brooklyn McAlear-Fanus in 2017.
Poulin was unstoppable from the jump, slicing through the Gee-Gees' defence throughout the evening, showing off her speed and finishing touches.
The Ravens never gave Ottawa a chance to come back in the fourth, outscoring the Gee-Gees 19-12 and leaving TD Place with the hardware.
The Carleton Ravens men's team was unable to stop the Gee-Gees two year run at Capital Hoops, falling 73-52 in the second half of the doubleheader.
Without Aubrey Dorey-Havens or Emanuel Milon, the Carleton Ravens struggled to get started in the men's game and trailed 18-13 after a quarter. After Louth-Mohamed Coulibably left the game in the first half, the battle only got more difficult for the Ravens.
Brock Newton led the Gee-Gees with 6 points in the second as Carleton failed to keep things tight. By halftime, the Ravens trailed by five points with Nelson Cilien leading all Ravens with only 8 points.
The Gee-Gees shot over 50% in the third quarter, blowing things open as the thin Ravens line-up was unable to respond.
In his first Capital Hoops Classic, Cedric Mbiaba led all Ravens with 13 points, while MJ Okado led all Ravens with 31 minutes played.
