Week Ending February 21, 2016
Brett Welychka (London, ON) of the men’s hockey team was a cut above the rest in the Ravens’ two-game sweep of the Nipissing Lakers in the OUA East quarter-finals this past week.
In Game 1 (Feb. 17), Welychka tallied the game-winning goal in Carleton’s 3-0 road victory over the Lakers in North Bay. The Ravens hosted Game 2 (Feb. 20) at the Ice House, and Welychka had two points (1G/1A), including his second game-winning goal, in Carleton’s 6-1 series clinching performance over Nipissing.
Welychka, who finished second in the CIS scoring race in 2015-16, was tied for the team scoring lead (3 PTS) in the Ravens’ first-round series, and will be counted on for point production in the OUA East semi-finals against McGill starting on February 24.
Brett, a first-year student-athlete, is enrolled in Arts at Carleton.
Megan Evans (Revelstoke, BC) of the women’s Nordic ski team was the top competitor for the Ravens over the weekend as her team captured first place overall at the 2016 OUA Nordic Skiing Championship hosted by Carleton.
Evans had an outstanding weekend, finishing with three silver medals and one gold. The sophomore finished second in several competitions, including the 7.5km Interval Free race (Feb. 19), the 3×2.7km Team Relay (Feb.20), and the 10km Mass Start (Feb.21).
Evans also received a gold medal for Carleton’s first-place team finish and was named an OUA-All Star following the Ravens first women’s Nordic championship title since 2004.
Megan studies Neuroscience and Mental Health at Carleton.
