Carleton Ravens men’s hockey team captain Brett Welychka is this week’s TSN 1200 Male Athlete of the Week.
Welychka, a third-year forward, had a single-game career-high six points in Carleton’s 9-6 win over Laurentian at Countryside Arena in Sudbury on January 12. The 5-foot-10 winger scored his first hat-trick of the season – the second of his OUA career – while chipping in with three helpers in the 15-goal marathon.
Welychka, a former London Knight and Belleville Bull (OHL), was held off the score sheet in the Ravens’ 4-3 shootout defeat at Nipissing on January 13, but his 27 points through 20 games in 2017-18 rank him tied for fourth in league scoring.
Brett, a native of London, ON, is pursuing a Psychology degree at Carleton University.
Carleton Ravens Alpine skier Hannah Schmidt is this week’s TSN 1200 Female Athlete of the Week.
Schmidt, who is now in her third year with the Ravens ski team, had a sensational start to the 2018 RSEQ racing circuit at Val St-Côme in Saint-Côme, QC from January 13-14.
The Dunrobin, ON native placed first among RSEQ competitors in both of her slalom races. Schmidt finished with a combined two-day race time of 1:48.52, helping her edge two Montreal Carabins skiers to claim the top spot on the podium.
Schmidt, a member of Team Canada at last year’s 2017 FISU Universiade, is pursuing a degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice at Carleton.
