Ravens sweep Ridgebacks from first round

Written by Clayton Johns

The Carleton Ravens dispatched of the UOIT Ridgebacks quickly in their OUA Eastern Conference first-round match-up. Carleton took game one 5-2 in Oshawa on Wednesday night before closing out the series at home with a 6-1 win at the Carleton Ice House on Friday. The Ravens will face UQTR in the second round.

Week in Review

Game One

Nick Duhn opened the scoring on Wednesday night, hammering home a cross-crease pass from Mitch Zion 2:34 in to the game. UOIT’s Brendan Wise tied the game three minutes later. Joey West’s power play goal with 3:18 left in the first period gave Carleton a 2-1 lead.

Joe Pleckaitis made the Carleton lead two goals when he one-timed a Mike Lomas pass from behind the UOIT net past Ridgebacks’ netminder Brendan O’Neill.  Carleton’s lead stood at 3-1 after two periods.

UOIT’s Kevin George beat goaltender Patrick Killeen with a breakaway shot seven minutes in to the second and cut the lead to 3-2. Ravens captain Damian Cross responded with a shorthanded goal six minutes later and David Weckworth provided a three-goal advantage with 2:15 left.

Killeen stopped 24 of the 26 shots he faced while the Ravens scored five times on the 39 shots sent at O’Neill.

Game Two

With the chance to closeout the best-of-three series at home on Friday night, the Ravens’ Mitch Zion opened the scoring seven minutes in with a power play goal. Chett Binning made it 2-0 seven minutes later with a nifty move from the left side of the ice. Less than a minute later, Corey Durocher made it 3-0 when he tucked the puck past O’Neill on a shorthanded breakaway. The Ravens led 3-0 and outshot UOIT 18-9 after the first.

In the second period, Matt Stanisz took a drop pass from Corey Durocher and let a wrist shot fly past O’Neill. The 4-0 lead led to UOIT pulling O’Neill in favour of backup Colin Dzijacky. The goal tending change didn’t stop David Weckworth from potting his second goal in as many games, as he put home the Ravens fifth at 17:28. Carleton led 5-0 after two periods.

The third period was a chippy and physical one with the Ridgebacks staring elimination in the face. Carleton goalie Francis Dupuis saw his shutout broken when Jesse Stoughton scored on the power play at 6:28. Cross responded with a power play goal of his own in the final 10 minutes, restoring the five-goal lead to close the scoring. The final period saw 28 minutes in minor penalties assessed to the two teams. The Ravens, however, played smart and came away with a 6-1 win and series victory.

Dupuis made 25 saves on 26 Ridgeback shots in the victory.

Week Ahead

The Ravens are now set for a second-round match-up with their arch-rival, the UQTR Patriotes. UQTR finished tied in points with the Ravens in the eastern conference, but Carleton earned the higher seed with one more win in the regular season. Carleton will have home ice for the series as a result. UQTR defeated the Nipissing Lakers in two games in their OUA East quarter-final match-up.

The Ravens are tentatively set to host UQTR in game one on Thursday at the Carleton Ice House at 7:00pm. Game two will be in Trois Rivieres on Saturday with game three back at Carleton on Sunday, if necessary. The schedule is subject to league approval.

The two rivals split their regular season series with a win each. UQTR won the first game at home 6-4 on October 11, 2014. Carleton responded with a 4-3 shootout win at the Ice House on November 28.

The series is sure to be an emotional one. The two clubs have not met since the 2013 playoffs when UQTR eliminated Carleton in a marathon 4OT game three. The game took four hours and 26 minutes to play and is the longest game in OUA men’s hockey history. Carleton is looking to seal a different fate this time.
