While completing his degree in Architecture (BArch. ’75), John Ruddy was also a proud member of the Ravens Football team, holding the position of cornerback (DB) from 1970-1975. Following graduation and eventually forming his own company, Trinity Development Group, John wanted to give back to Carleton University. His personal donations launched the John Ruddy Bursary and the John Ruddy Scholarship, both in the Department of Architecture.

In 2009 the talk of a Ravens Football Revival began, and John took a strong leadership position. Not only was John a key donor and financial supporter, he participated in the design of a new logo and uniforms, locker rooms and stadium facilities and hiring of a new head coach. After a 15- year absence, Ravens Football proudly took to the field in 2013, bringing academics and athletics together and uniting the student community to proudly promote the spirit of Carleton University.
