(OTTAWA, ON) — The UQAM Citadins earned their first win of the McKeen Metro Glebe tournament in an easy 62-37 rout of the Laurier Golden Hawks in the tournament’s opening game.

BOX SCORE

A one-sided 19-0 second quarter score for UQAM was the difference in the game, as Laurier scored only 16 points in the first half on a dismal 7-38 shooting performance. The team went 2-17 from behind the 3-point line in the first two quarters.

The Golden Hawks started the game in pole position with a 16-14 lead after one quarter. Sarah Dillon started well with 5 quick points off of the bench, while Nicole Morrison added 4 points. However, the Citadins were able to keep pace with a balanced scoring attack from their starting five. Janice Quintos paced UQAM in the first half with 9 points, while Sarah Cabana and Jessica Lubin each had 8 points.

UQAM’s smothering defence and size advantage proved to throw the Golden Hawks out of sync to begin the second. UQAM’s Jessica Lubin, a 6-1 center, was an imposing figure in the lane as she led a block party with 5 swats in the first half. Laurier’s scoreless second quarter had them trailing 33-16 after 20 minutes.

Nicole Morrison finally ended a 21-0 scoring run by UQAM with her layup at 7:20 of the third quarter. However, the Golden Hawks did not respond well in the third quarter. The Citadins continued to work the ball around the floor with little resistance from Laurier. UQAM led 51-21 after three quarters of play, limiting Laurier to just 5 points.

The Golden Hawks outscored the Citadins 16-11 in the fourth quarter, but it was too little too late.

Nicole Morrison led Laurier with 8 points, while Sarah Dillon had 5 points and Courtney Bruce contributed 5 as well. Laurier shot a combined 13-71 (18.3%) for the game.

UQAM only received 2 points from their bench, but each of their starters scored in double figures. Lubin poured in 14 points followed by Quintos and Celestin with 13 each.
