OTTAWA, ON — The Carleton Ravens began their quest for a sixteenth straight House-Laughton Tournament title with an emphatic opening act, defeating the Victoria Vikes, 106-52, on Friday evening at the Ravens’ Nest.

Fifth-year senior Connor Wood (Guelph, ON) led the way with a clinical scoring performance, as the 2016 CIS Final 8 MVP poured in a game-high 28 points (9-15 FG, 6-8 3PT FG) to go along with 5 rebounds.

In their first game of the 27th annual House-Laughton fall classic, the Ravens had five players reach double-digits in scoring to help them surpass the 100-point plateau for the sixth time in ten exhibition games since the beginning of August.

The Ravens got off to the races by pelting Victoria with a three-ball attack courtesy of Connor Wood, who connected on two 3-pointers in a row to give Carleton a boost early on.

Carleton’s aerial assault on the Vikes continued as guard Emmanuel Owootoah (Rexdale, ON) nailed two consecutive triples of his own to push Carleton out in front 25-13 after the first quarter of play.

The Vikes went on a roll to start the second as UVic senior Grant Sitton scored seven straight points, highlighted by a steal and breakaway slam that got his team back into the contest.

After Carleton’s lead was trimmed to 10 points midway through the quarter thanks to Victoria’s determination, the Ravens took back control late in the period with a 10-2 run, capped with a massive put back cram by rookie Eddie Ekiyor (Ottawa, ON).

Carleton knocked down seven three-point shots in the opening half as they extended their advantage to 47-28 at the break. The Ravens dominated Victoria on the glass, 28-14, through twenty minutes of play.

Carleton’s lethal offence was nearly unstoppable in the third. The Vikes could not contain Connor Wood in the quarter, as he posted 15 of the Ravens’ 34 points in the frame, lifting the hosts to a commanding 81-42 scoreline with one quarter to play.

It was much of the same in the fourth, as Carleton closed the game with a 25-10 finish. Ravens guard Yasiin Joseph (Ottawa, ON) dished out four assists, and senior Joe Rocca (Sarnia, ON) scored 10 of his 12 points in the final ten minutes.

The Ravens’ undefeated preseason continues, as the team moves to 10-0 through the 2016-17 exhibition calendar.

Carleton will go up against the Laval Rouge et Or on Day 2 of the House-Laughton Tournament. The two sides met just two weeks ago at Acadia’s Stu Aberdeen Challenge, where the Ravens secured an 85-62 win.
