McNamee and Welychka named to U Sports All-Star roster for series vs. Canadian World Junior Team

TORONTO, ONU Sports announced Monday the university men’s hockey roster set to face the Canadian National Junior Team in a two-game exhibition series ahead of the 2017 IIHF World Junior Ice Hockey Championship.

Carleton Ravens forwards Michael McNamee (Perth, ON) and Brett Welychka (London, ON) have both been named to the 23-man U Sports roster for this year’s games as part of the National Junior Team’s preparation for the 41st IIHF World Junior event in Toronto and Montreal (Dec. 26 – Jan. 5).

McNamee, Welychka and the U Sports All-Stars will face the Canadian World Junior prospects at the Centre d’Excellence Sports Rousseau, home of the QMJHL’s Blainville-Boisbriand Armada, on Monday, Dec. 12 at 7 p.m. ET and Tuesday, Dec. 13 at 1 p.m. ET.

Michael McNamee – Forward – 4th year – Perth, ON
McNamee will be participating in his second straight U Sports vs. National Junior Team series, having represented Carleton at last year’s showcase in Toronto. McNamee, who suited up for the Quebec Ramparts (2011-12) and Sherbrooke Phoenix (2012-13) while playing in the QMJHL, is enjoying a stellar campaign for the Ravens with a team-leading 27 points (9 G/ 18 A) in 18 games. Carleton’s 2016-17 team captain has eight multi-point performances and only two penalty minutes. The native of Perth, ON was named an OUA East Second-Team All-Star in 2015-16 as well as the winner of the East Division’s Most Sportsmanlike Player.

Brett Welychka – Forward – 2nd year – London, ON
Following his CIS Rookie of the Year campaign in 2015-16, Welychka sat out his team’s first six regular season games, but has scored 14 points (7 G/7 A) in 12 games since returning to the ice. The 5-foot-10 forward has a team-leading four power play goals along with four multi-points games this year.  In addition to his ROY honours last season, Welychka was named to the CIS All-Rookie team, an OUA First-Team All-Star, OUA Rookie of the Year and a member of the OUA All-Rookie team. Welychka, a product of the London Knights (2010-11/2014-15) and Belleville Bulls (2014-15), will be playing for the U Sports All-Star team for the first time.
