2017 FISU Winter Universiade Report: Wednesday, February 1

ALMATY, KAZAKHSTAN — Canada’s pursuit of a gold medal in men’s hockey continued on Day 5 of the 2017 FISU Winter Universiade, as several members of the Carleton Ravens program helped the red and white to a 14-0 walkover of Great Britain in second game of the competition.


Ravens men’s hockey captain Michael McNamee (Perth, ON) had one of the top games of any player donning the maple leaf, as the fourth-year forward scored a goal while adding three assists in the blowout victory.


Canada thoroughly dominated the play all game, particularly in the first period when they took a 6-0 lead into the intermission. Carleton’s Brett Welychka (London, ON) scored his third goal of the tournament – the team’s fifth marker of the period – while Ryan Van Stralen (Prescott, ON) tallied a pair of helpers in the opening period.

Welychka continued to deliver up front in the the middle stanza, notching his second multi-goal game of the tournament when he potted a marker for an 8-0 lead.

In the third, Corey Durocher (Ottawa, ON) scored his first goal of the tournament with the team’s final snipe of the game.

Canada sits at 2-0 after two games, but sits third in its pool based on goal differential. They take on group leader Slovakia on Friday, February 3 at 1:30 a.m. ET. The game can be seen live on FISU TV.
