WHITBY, ON — Two recent graduates of the Carleton Ravens rugby team have been named to the 2017 Ontario Blues Senior Women’s Long List as announced by Rugby Ontario.

Team veterans Mel Judges (Ottawa, ON) and Olivia Merritt (Victoria, BC) have been invited to training camp and will look to crack the Blues’ lineup for the 2017 Canadian Rugby Championship in Truro, Nova Scotia from July 17-22.

Judges, who played one year at Carleton following four seasons with the Queen’s Gaels, made an immediate impact in her lone season with the Ravens in 2016. A number eight by position, Judges added 15 points on three tries in seven games, and was named Carleton’s game MVP on one occasion. Judges plays club with the Ottawa Irish Rugby Club.

Merritt, a member of the Barrhaven Scottish Rugby Football Club, ended her 2016 Ravens season with 25 points on five scores, including a three-try haul at Bishop’s in the first game of the year. The Ravens’ 2015 team MVP finished her Carleton career as the second leading scorer in program history with 75 points. Last summer, Merritt, a centre, was named to the 2016 Team Ontario Senior Women’s Long List and she also attended the Rugby Canada East ID camp.

Also named to the 2017 Ontario Senior Women’s Long List was former Ravens RSEQ All-Star and All-Canadian, Natasha Smith.

The Ravens finished the 2016 campaign with their best record (3-3-1, 7 points) since the program turned varsity and began competing in the RSEQ in the fall of 2012.
