U SPORTS TOP TEN TUESDAY (#10): Ravens MBB opens at No. 1, WBB & MSOC sit at No. 4

Three Carleton Ravens teams are featured in this week’s U SPORTS Top 10. The men’s basketball program opens the year at No. 1 in the first poll of the season, the women’s basketball team starts the season at No. 4, while the men’s soccer completes the annual rankings as the No. 4 team in Canada.

MEN’S BASKETBALL:

Head coach Dave Smart will begin his 18th season patrolling the Ravens’ sideline with his team ranked No. 1 in Canada. After finishing the preseason with a 16-2 record, Carleton received 45 of 47 first-place votes, with the other two going to Brock (1) and UBC (1).

Carleton has been ranked No.1 in Canada since the second last poll of the 2015-16 season, a streak of 17 consecutive number one appearances. The Ravens were ranked No. 1 in the country for the entire 2016-17 season, capping of their season with a 13th national championship.

In the Dave Smart era (1999 to present), the Ravens have opened 14 of his 18 seasons as the top-ranked side in Canada.

Carleton opens the season against the Guelph Gryphons on November 3 at the Ravens’ Nest.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL:

Following the program’s first OUA Critelli Cup championship title and a bronze medal at U SPORTS Women’s Final 8 last season, the Ravens open up the 2017-18 campaign ranked No. 4 in Canada behind McGill (1), Regina (2) and Acadia (3).

The Ravens enjoyed a strong preseason, finishing their nine-game exhibition schedule with a 7-2 mark.

Carleton was ranked in all 14 polls last season, which included its first No. 1 ranking on November 15, 2016.

The Ravens host the Guelph Gryphons in the opening game of the season on Friday, November 3.

MEN’S SOCCER:

In the final men’s soccer poll of the 2017 season, the Ravens end the year ranked No. 4 in Canada.

Carleton’s Top 10 presence in the rankings reaches a sixth consecutive poll, and the team’s fifth straight No. 4 poll position.

The Ravens defeated the UOIT Ridgebacks 7-0 in the OUA quarterfinal on Sunday, October 29. Carleton will compete in the conference Final Four for the first time since 2013.

Carleton will face the No. 8-ranked McMaster Marauders in the OUA semifinals on Friday, November 3 (6 p.m.) at York University.
