Ottawa Sports Awards: Taffe Charles named Male Coach of the Year, Ravens clean up at annual gala

The 65th Annual Ottawa Sports Awards Gala took place at Algonquin College this evening, recognizing the best of Ottawa’s amateur sports community in 2017. The gala was filled to capacity, with over 600 winners and supporters in attendance and tickets sold out.

Carleton Ravens women’s basketball coach Taffe Charles claimed one of the major awards, winning Male Coach of the Year honours at this year’s banquet. The Ravens experienced the best season in the history of the program, winning the OUA Critelli Cup championship along with a bronze at U SPORTS nationals.

The Ravens men’s basketball team was named Male Team of the Year for the 13th time in the history of the Ottawa Sports Awards. Carleton won its 13th title in the past 15 years, finishing the regular season with a perfect 19-0 record.

Ravens women’s basketball player Catherine Traer (Chelsea, QC) took home the Female Basketball Player of the Year award after a stellar 2016-17 season that saw her earn a 2017 U SPORTS Final 8 All-Tournament All-Star award.

Additionally, Carleton’s women’s basketball team and men’s and women’s Nordic teams were celebrated for their amazing seasons.
