OTTAWA, ON — The Toronto Varsity Blues not only held onto their points lead after day one but extended it into their first Kay Aoyama Trophy as OUA Women’s Fencing champions since 2010-11 on Sunday at the Norm Fenn Gymnasium at Carleton University.

It’s the school’s 11th overall championship and moves them ahead of Western for the most victories of any OUA women’s fencing school. Toronto’s 360 points was easily enough to top the rest of the field – 68 more than the second place Mustangs.

Heading into Sunday with a 21-point lead, the Varsity Blues refused to give any of it up, reaching top-two in all three events. After sweeping the podium in the Foil on Saturday, Toronto cruised through to the final in the team portion and defeated the Queen’s Gaels to capture gold. The Toronto women also captured a second gold in the Epee. A sweep of the team events was in prime position to come true but a valiant performance from the Mustangs in the Sabre final stifled the Varsity Blues, limiting them to silver.

Western followed up their strong day-one performance with an equally stellar performance in the team events, leading to a second-place finish overall. The Mustangs’ silver in the Epee and gold in the Sabre helped the school finish with 292 points, enough to secure their spot ahead of the RMC Paladins in the standings.

Rounding out the top three overall was RMC, who tallied two bronze medals on Sunday. The Paladins beat the McMaster Marauders in the Foil competition and the Ryerson Rams in the Epee team relay. They finished with 235 points, 17 ahead of Queen’s to hold onto third place.

The final medals on the afternoon went to the Gaels, who captured Foil silver and a bronze in the Sabre as they defeated the Carleton Ravens.
