RAVENS’ NEST, Ottawa – The Carleton Ravens Men’s Basketball team got off to a quick start in the first game of the Can-Am Shootout series. They led the Cincinnati Bearcats 41-29 at the half and never looked back. Cincinnati was coming off an 85-57 blowout over the uOttawa Gee-Gee’s the previous night in Montreal.
Last year the Ravens hosted six NCAA Division I teams and won five of those games. One of those wins coming against Alabama, led by 2018 8th overall NBA draft pick Collin Sexton who was held to 4-13 from the field. The Ravens went on to a perfect 23-0 regular season, and a bronze medal finish at Canada’s nationals.
Eddie Ekiyor came off the bench to lead all scorers with 26. He had a number of easy dunks as Carleton’s guards were working the point to perfection. “My guards really led to that – doing their work in the paint, led to my easy buckets around the rim.” –Eddie Ekiyor on his points in the paint. Munis Tutu being one of those guards added 21 points on five three-pointers. TJ Lall added a double-double with 16 points and 11 boards. The Ravens finished with 38 points in the paint and connected on ten shots from beyond the arc.
The Ravens Men’s Basketball team is proving yet again that they can compete with NCAA Division I talent. “You approach every game the same – obviously it’s the start of the season, but you have to approach every game with a mentality to win and dig in.” –the key to winning against NCAA teams says Ekiyor. The Bearcats entered the Big Dance last season as the 2nd seed, getting upset by Nevada in the second round. They just couldn’t get things going tonight as they went 21-54 from the field.
Next up is Mississippi Wednesday night at 7:00pm in the Ravens’ Nest. They have not made a tournament appearance since the 2015-2016 season. Unfortunately, none of the NCAA games will be live streamed. Follow our newly launched Ravens Basketball accounts on Twitter and Instagram for news, highlights, and updates (@CURavensBBall).
