TORONTO, Ontario – The Queen’s Gaels and University of Toronto Varsity Blues notched narrow victories in semi-final action at the 2018 OUA men’s water polo championship on Saturday afternoon (Dec. 1) at Varsity Pool.
Queen’s defeated the Carleton Ravens 6-5 in a shootout before the host Blues edged the McMaster Marauders 8-6 in the second semifinal of the day.
Queen’s and Toronto will meet in tomorrow’s gold-medal match at 3:45 p.m., while Carleton and McMaster will play for bronze at 2:30 p.m.
Semifinal #1: Queen’s 6, Carleton 5 (4-2 SO)
Trailing 5-4 in the last minute of the fourth quarter, Queen’s Connor Crowe scored with just one second remaining to force the shootout. The Gaels took the best-of-five shootout 4-2 as Crowe, Alex Le Blanc, Alex Cox-Twardowski and Connor Lundell-Smith all scored.
Crowe led the team with two goals in regulation time, while Diederik Hartog, Hendrick Fang and Nikola Cugalj each added single tallies in the win.
Spence Thomson netted two goals to lead the Gee-Gees, while Duncan Branda, Christopher Callard and Mihalo Krstic each scored once in the loss.
