TORONTO, Ontario – The perfect season continues for Carleton after they downed fellow unbeaten powerhouse Ryerson 76-69 in Saturday’s marquee matchup.
Returning to the court for the first time in over a month, the Ravens looked like they hadn’t lost a step as they leapt out to a 12-0 lead early. Ryerson managed to wake up and get the sellout crowd back into things with a Tanor Ngom dunk to cut the lead to six, followed by a Jean-Victor Mukama three shortly after to further trim the Ravens lead. Carleton regrouped before the quarter was out though, using a pair of baskets by guard Yasiin Joseph to go up 24-15 after the 1st quarter.
The 2nd quarter was more Carleton, and more of Yasiin Joseph. The Ottawa native drilled back to back threes early on to bump the lead to ten. Joseph would close the half with a game high 13 points. It was a full team effort in the first 20 minutes, as nine different Ravens put points on the board, and defensively held Ryerson to just 11 points in the 2nd. A Stanley Mayambo three in the final seconds put Carleton firmly in control going into the break up 44-26.
The second half saw a rejuvenated Ryerson team take the floor, as Ngom once again got the fans on their feet with an and one dunk to bring the Rams within 13. The home side would pull even closer before the 3rd quarter was out, capping off a 22-15 quarter with a Yusuf Ali jumper to make it 59-48 Carleton after 30 minutes.
Things would get a lot more nerve wracking for Dave Smart’s squad in the 4th quarter when Ryerson continued their hot shooting to get within single digits of the Ravens lead. Rams guard Myles Charvis was the big catalyst in the comeback bid, scoring 10 of Ryerson’s first 14 points as the Rams raced out to a 14-7 run to get within two possessions at 66-62. Just at the right time though Joseph responded with his third three of the game to give Carleton some breathing room. Ryerson got back within five late, but the Ravens converted from the charity stripe and forced long contested shots from the Rams to close out the game.
Eddie Ekiyor finished with a game high 23 points, while Joseph was right behind with 20. The two teams will have their much awaited rematch later this month at the Ravens’ Nest.
