OTTAWA, Ontario – The Carleton Ravens defeated the Ryerson Rams 1-0 on Saturday afternoon to clinch first place in the OUA East standings with one regular season game left to play.
It was the second match between the two teams this season, with the Rams handing the Ravens their only loss of the season in Toronto on October 12th.
“We’re a bit of a rival, we’ve been going back and forth for the last two to three seasons now. It’s a healthy one, they beat us, and we beat them. I think that’s always good from a competition perspective but when you have two of the top teams in the OUA coming together, nationally ranked teams, you’re always going to have a little bit of fireworks,” said Ravens Head Coach Kwesi Loney.
The Ravens started quick on the day, notching their goal seven minutes into the match after a scramble in front of goal. Chris Malekos slid in attempting to bundle the ball in, but it came loose for Quinn Honeyman-Wootton in front to deposit home.
Neither team was able to create an additional high danger scoring chance in the match. The Ravens backline continued to frustrate the Rams, holding them off the scoresheet entirely after conceding three goals in their loss last week.
“When you play in these bigger games the key is to maintain consistency in play. I thought we were solid defensively. I felt like we didn’t take our [offensive] chances when we needed to, particularly when we had possession of the ball. We just need to continue to work on that, just move a little quicker off the ball,” added Loney.
The Ravens will play their final regular season game on Sunday, October 19th as the host the Trent Excalibur at 3pm at MNP Park.
