Carleton’s Stuart Turnbull named “OUA East Player of the Year.”

DAVE SMART OUA EAST COACH OF THE YEAR AND ROB SAUNDERS OUA EAST DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR.

The OUA announced the 2009 OUA East All-Star Teams and Major Awards Recipients and the Carleton University Ravens are well represented as the Ravens Fifth Year Guard Stuart Turnbull, Kingston, Ontario was named the 2009 OUA East Player of the Year.  Turnbull along with Aaron Doornekamp, Odessa, Ontario were named to the OUA East First All-Star Team.  Head Coach Dave Smart won his fifth OUA East Coach of Year award and fifth year veteran Guard, Rob Saunders, Kingston, Ontario was named the 2009 OUA East Defensive Player of the Year.  Rounding out the awards was Kyle Smendziuk, Kanata, Ontario who was named to the OUA East All-Rookie Team. 

The Ravens finish the 2008-09 OUA East regular season with a 21-1 record, and their 9th consecutive OUA East Regular Season Title.  The Ravens were led by the fifth year senior trio, as Turnbull led the team with 368 points (an average of 16.7 per game), and was second with 60 assists and 27 steals. He also contributed 111 rebounds, including 77 on defense. Turnbull’s teammate, Rob Saunders contributed 57 defensive rebounds, 18 steals and nine blocks on the season. He was among the top players in minutes for the Ravens, averaging 25.2 per game.

Doornekamp, who was last year’s OUA East Player of the Year, averaged 14.4 points per game and 146-total rebounds for a 7.0 rebound per game average as he played in 21 OUA East regular season games in 2008-09. Smendziuk played in all 22 OUA East regular season games averaging 4.2 points per game and 3.0 rebounds per game in his first CIS season.

Smart, guided Carleton to a 21-1 OUA East regular season record and was 9-0 in exhibition games against CIS opponents as Carleton won the House-Laughton Hoops Classic (Carleton’s Tournament in October), the Laval University Tournament (Quebec City in October) and the Rod Shoveller Memorial Tournament (Dalhousie in January).  This is Dave’s Fifth OUA East Coach of the Year Award in the past 8 seasons, going into tonight’s game his OUA/CIS regular and post season career record is an amazing 235-25, a 92% winning mark!
