Fredericton, N.B. - Alexandra Telford (Ottawa, Ont.) is Carleton's first track athlete to medal at the U SPORTS championships. Telford ran a school-record 38.69s in Heat 1 of the finals to claim the bronze.
Telford becomes the first female and only the second student-athlete to medal at the championship since the return of Carleton track and field in 2013.
After winning both the 60m Hurdles and 300m at the RSEQ Championship Telford decided to focus her efforts on the 300m at the championship, a decision which paid off Friday at the Irving Oil Fieldhouse.
After qualifying fifth for the two-heat final with a time of 38.9s, Telford raced out of Heat 1 needing to set a great time with the top four qualifiers still to come.
Despite a misfire at the start of the final which forced the runners to reset and return to their blocks, Telford looked unphased as she tore down the track leading her heat from the first curve to the finish.
Telford joins heptathlete Telvin Tavernier as the only student-athletes to medal after Tavernier finished second in the heptathlon and third in the pole vault in 2018.
