The Carleton Ravens took their #3 U Sports National ranking to Downsview Park in Toronto, Ont. on Saturday and took down the TMU Bold by a score of 3-0.
Carleton sent a ruthless attack toward the TMU goal from the opening whistle. In the opening 10 minutes, first-year midfielder Michael Blight (North Bay, Ont.) struck a spectacular shot with his right foot that was just tipped over the crossbar by the TMU goalkeeper to deny Blight his first goal as a Raven.
After some early Carleton chances, the Ravens opened the scoring in the 17th minute. Danny Assaf (Ottawa, Ont.) blocked an attempted long-ball by the TMU keeper, tracked down the loose ball in the box, and fed Scott Mazzotta (Ottawa, Ont.) who made no mistake tapping it into the gaping goal to put Carleton up 1-0. The Ravens were not done yet as Luca Piccioli (Ottawa, Ont.) buried a rebound in the 34th minute to put the Ravens up 2-0 at the half.
Carleton did not take their foot off the gas in the second half. In the 59th minute, Scott Mazzotta (Ottawa, Ont.) turned beautifully on his left foot before striking one home in the bottom right corner to give him his second of the match. Moments later, TMU was issued a red card after a tackle by Christian Westlaken (Toronto, Ont.) stopped a Carleton counterattack in its tracks. The Ravens were able to control possession with the man-advantage and commanded the final 30 minutes of the game.
With the win, Carleton improves to 4-0-1 on the season having collected 13 out of a possible 15 points through five matches.
The Ravens are back in action Sept. 25 at 3:15 p.m. as they close out their Toronto road-trip with a match at Varsity Stadium against the University of Toronto Varsity Blues. The Varsity Blues and Ravens drew 0-0 in their first meeting this season on Sept. 11. Carleton’s next home game is Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. live from TAAG Park where the Ravens will face the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks. Tickets are available now!
