OTTAWA – In front of a loud and supporter crowd, the Carleton Ravens scored early and often as they beat the McGill Martlets 92-0 on Friday evening. In a record-setting match at TAAG Park, the Ravens set a program record for largest margin of victory while back Maya Addai took the program’s all-time scoring lead before the game was ten minutes old.
The Ravens wasted little time opening the scoring as Malak Saif el Nasr broke free in the third minute for the games opening try. Off the restart Ravens back Maya Addai would continue her hot start to the 2022 season breaking through the Martlets for her seventh try of the season. With the try Addai tied current Ravens assistant coach Tasha Flowersmith for the program’s all-time scoring record. A tie that would only last seconds as Addai would quickly step up and complete her own conversion for the 126th and 127th points of her career. The Ravens would add five more tries in the first half with Lauryn Walker (Brampton, Ont.), Vanessa Chiappetta (Rigaud, Que.) and Addai all adding tries.
Splitting the kicking duties throughout the first half Addai and Chiappetta had each put their names all over the score sheet with Addai scoring three tries and two conversions to Chiappetta’s two tries and four conversions. At the break the Ravens led the Martlets 47-0.
The Ravens would waste little time getting started in the second half as Joleen Mason would take the Ravens first possession all the way back for a score. Saif el Nasr would add her second of the game for the Ravens before five minutes had rolled off the clock in the second half and less than two minutes later Addai would score again on another long run through traffic. Vannessa Chiappetta would score twice more for the Ravens in the second half while Claire File and Brianna Messer each added their first of the game as the Ravens put up 45 in the second half for a record-setting 92-0 win.
The win moves Carleton to 2-0 with a perfect 10 points to start the RSEQ season. The Ravens will remain at home next week when they host their recent rivals the Montreal Carabins in a rematch of last seasons RSEQ Bronze Medal Game at 6 PM at TAAG Park. Tickets for that highly anticipated rematch are on sale now.
“We started off really strong, on a hot day it’s nice to see us run the ball and execute as we’d talked about.”
On Maya Addai and Vanessa Chiappetta…
“Two strong players for us, Maya was gone last year with the Canada Rugby 7s Development, so with her back here to play another year of U SPORTS it’s nice to see all the work that she’s done. And Vanessa too, after a strong season last year as the MVP for Carleton it’s nice to see that she’s continued that trend too.”
On the strong community and alumni support…
“It’s great and it’s something we’ve been trying to build towards for the last few years. It’s really important that the alumni come back and support the team, seeing that they were here for the early days where we were the McGills in these games. Now they can see their hard labours come to fruition as now we’re the team putting up the points.”
