North Bay, Ontario – The Carleton Ravens used a 14-4 run in the second quarter to overcome an 8-point deficit for a 65-52 victory.
In their first road trip of the Regular season, the Carleton Ravens women’s basketball team opened the weekend on the road against Nipissing and quickly picked up where they left off at home Kyana Jade Poulin (Brossard, Que.) opened the scoring for the Ravens in a back and forth opening five minutes that saw Nicole Budd give the Lakers their first lead with a deep three which opened a 13-2 run for a 15-11 first quarter lead.
The Ravens slowly came to life in the second quarter, using strong ball movement and team speed to create space in the paint. Led by an all-around team effort the Ravens battled their way back to lead at the half 31-29. At the break, the Ravens inside play had led to 20 points in the paint to the Lakers 4.
The Ravens found a rhythm offensively in the third quarter, led by a pair of threes from Teresa Donato (Ottawa, Ont.). Tightening up on defence the Ravens outscored the Lakers 16-7 in the third to extend their lead to 11 heading into the final quarter.
Donato and the Carleton bench would continue their strong showings in the fourth quarter as the Ravens pulled away from Nipissing eclipsing the early deficit for the 13-point victory.
"I thought Kinly Rice and Kyana Poulin were great for us from start to finish. They set the tone at the defensive end, they had a great week of practice and it translated into the game. They were leaders for us tonight."
"With a young team there's a bit of depth there, and we're not just going to reward hard work, but people are establishing new roles."
On Teresa Donato:
"What she's done to address getting back to basics has been the difference maker. She's getting back in the gym and working on her game outside of the regular schedule. She's doing it on her own time and there's no secret to success you just put the time in and she's done that."
On facing Laurentian tomorrow:
"It's a tough place to play, they're extremely well coached and organized and they play hard. It's going to be a good test for us back-to-back on the road."
