The Carleton Ravens extended their winning streak to six on Friday night with a 69-64 victory over the University of Toronto Varsity Blues.
The two teams played a very even first quarter trading leads several times while working hard to find a rhythm defensively. After Toronto had pulled ahead to an early lead, Jacqueline Urban came off the bench for Carleton quickly making an impact. After collecting a defensive rebound, Urban finished the transition scoring a right-handed layup to give the Ravens a 9-8 lead. The two teams would continue to exchange leads throughout the quarter before Urban cleaned up a Buisa miss to put home her sixth point of the quarter for the 18-15 lead.
After the break it was more Ravens with Carleton forcing Toronto to take nine personal fouls leading to eight Ravens free throws. Toronto kept pace throughout the quarter, taking advantage of threes from Ellen Ougrinov and Lauren Boers to keep the Ravens from extending their lead. At the break, the Ravens continued to lead by three.
Carleton exploded in the third quarter, with Kali Pocrnic scoring the four points from the line the Ravens went on an 8-2 run and extended their lead to seven. Another 8-0 run with contributions from Urban, Pocrnic and Kyana Jade Poulin saw the Ravens extend the lead before Ougrinov and Kaylee Williams both got hot from range to cut the Ravens lead to six.
With six minutes to play, the Ravens found themselves up by 15 before the Varsity Blues hit five threes to tighten the game. The Ravens would shore up defensively and lock down the Blues, as Urban scored the final three points of the game to hold off Toronto.
The Ravens return to action tomorrow afternoon when they host the TMU Bold at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
