OTTAWA - An uncharacteristically slow start was the difference as the Carleton Ravens fell to the uOttawa Gee-Gees 62-55 on Wednesday night.
Carleton fell behind early as the Gee-Gees started hot with Natsuki Szczokin scoring 13 first-quarter points. While the Gee-Gees built up an early lead, Carleton shot only 28% in the first falling behind by 11.
Carleton would trail by as much as 13 in the first half before closing the gap in the second half. Dorcas Buisa (Gatineau, Que.) led the Ravens in their comeback effort, scoring a team-high 18 points.
Despite outscoring the Gee-Gees in the middle quarters, it wasn't enough for the Ravens who failed to close the gap in the fourth.
"They were really tough tonight," said head coach Dani Sinclair of the visiting Gee-Gees. "They're going to be a tough team moving forward." Reflecting on her team's play, coach Sinclair felt increased teamwork could be the difference going forward. "We took hero shots, I thought we were trying to win the game in the second quarter."
Despite getting close, Carleton knows there's room to grow if they want an opportunity at post-season success. "Our expectations are always to play at a high level and we just didn't really show up tonight."
The Ravens have one last opportunity to show up and play the way they want before the playoffs when they travel to Lakehead on Saturday night.
