The Carleton Ravens women’s hockey team won a highly competitive game Sunday afternoon, taking down the Martlets by a score of 3-2.
The Ravens kicked off Sunday afternoon's game against McGill with a beautiful ceremony celebrating their seniors as they got ready to play their last home game at the Carleton Ice House.
The Ravens started the first period strong, playing with lots of energy. Second-year forward Jackie Grosso (Mississauga, ON) generated numerous scoring chances but unfortunately, Carleton could not capitalize on the opportunities. McGill’s goaltender, Sarah Carmichael, played a solid start, stopping Carleton’s 13 first-period shots.
McGill came out of the gates flying in the second period, hammering home an early go-ahead goal with 19 seconds into the period. Carleton forward Lanie Guimond (Kirkland Lake, ON) tied the game up at 1-1 after burying a rebound goal with 9:41 to play in the second period, making that her third goal in only two games. The score remained tied at 1-1 after an action-packed second period in which Carleton had a whopping 21 shots on net.
Midway through the third period, Carleton found themselves in penalty trouble. After failing to capitalize on two powerplay opportunities, McGill finally got their offence rolling when captain Christiana Colizza (Sault Ste. Marie, ON) scored the go-ahead goal on a frantic play in front of the Carleton net giving McGill a 2-1 lead with 5:08 remaining in the third period. As the third period was winding down, Carleton’s Lanie Guimond (Kirkland Lake, ON) double-dipped for the second time this weekend, scoring a timely equalizing goal with 29 seconds left to force the game into overtime.
The Ravens struggled to spark their offence in the early moments of the period. Carleton got going in the final minutes as defencemen Nicole Hunter (Pickering, ON) ripped a wicked one-timer goal to win the game off a picture-perfect setup from Hayden Serniuk (Burlington, ON) and Avery Krawchuk (Calgary, AB).
Carleton will head to Concordia to play the Stingers on February 17th, which will wrap up their 2022-23 season.
