Windsor, Ont. - The Carleton Ravens women's basketball team improved to 3-0 on the season Saturday night with a 57-52 victory over the Windsor Lancers.
The Ravens got out to a big lead in the first quarter as Jacqueline Urban (Ancaster, Ont.) got the Ravens started with back-to-back buckets to open the scoring. Midway through the first, the Ravens would build a 10-4 lead. Just as Carleton looked comfortable a 5-0 run to finish the quarter put the Lancers ahead 13-12 after 10 minutes.
The Ravens would open the second on a 10-0 run as Kyana Jade Poulin (St-Bruno, Que.) hit a corner three and Kali Pocrnic (Oakville, Ont.) took over inside to put Carleton ahead by 9. Under immense defensive pressure from the Ravens' aggressive press, it would be more than seven minutes into the quarter before the Lancers got their first chance to score in the second quarter when Grace Koffi went to the line. Koffi would go one for two at the line.
The Ravens' smothering defence would swallow up the Lancers not allowing them to score a single field goal until Kira Atherle scored for the Lancers cutting the lead to 26-19 at the half.
Both teams went rather cold in the third quarter, but the Lancers were able to get hot from behind the arc and tie the game up.
The Ravens would come to life in the fourth, after trading a few early leads. Tatyanna Burke (Winona, Ont.) would find herself with space under the rim to put the Ravens ahead for good. Carleton would pull ahead expanding their lead despite a series of threes from Windsor to keep things close. Kyana Jade Poulin would ice the game from the free throw line and the Ravens would finish their 3-game sweep of the Western division.
