OTTAWA - The University of Ottawa Gee-Gees women's hockey team retained the Alerts Cup winning the 2023-24 Colonel By Classic 2-1.
With the Gee-Gees on a 5-on-3 power play midway through the second period, Arianne Gagnon placed a shot under the arm of Caitlin Whitehead for the eventual game-winner.
Gagnon's goal put the Gee-Gees ahead 2-0 after Katherine Birkby scored her first of the season late as she sprawled to tuck a backhand past Whitehead. The Gee-Gees outshot Carleton 9-5 in the first period establishing their cycle well inside the Carleton zone.
Following Gagnon's goal the Ravens rallied, applying some pressure and drawing their second power play of the afternoon. With the advantage, the Ravens were able to create an opportunity in transition as Abigail Byrne forced her way between two Gee-Gees defenders and beat Mahika Sarazin over the right shoulder to cut the lead in half.
Despite the Ravens' attempts to even things up, a physical third period saw a number of injuries slow Carleton's offensive progress. With the game on the line, the Ravens' power play was unable to solve Sarazin a second time.
The Ravens lengthy road trip continues on Friday when they travel to McGill before continuing on their way to Bishop's Saturday night. Carleton will finally return home on December 3 when they host the Montreal Carabins at 4:00 p.m.
