OTTAWA - The Carleton Ravens finished 2023 with their first loss of the season falling 74-56 to the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Thursday night. With the loss, the women's basketball team concluded 2023 with a 9-1 record.
The Ravens got off to a rough start in enemy territory as the Gee-Gees couldn’t miss from three and quickly built a 10-0 lead. As Carleton started to find their feet under them Teresa Donato (Ottawa, Ont.) helped to get things started scoring four straight points for Carleton Jacqueline Urban (Ancaster, Ont.) continued her hot play stepping off the screen to hit a deep three before making two more at the lane to cut the lead to five in just under two minutes.
After battling their way back into the game Carleton’s defensive pressure started to make a difference forcing Gee-Gees to miss letting the Ravens' strong defensive play take over on the glass. Kyana-Jade Poulin (Saint-Bruno, Que.) would start the next phase for the offense in the latter half of the first quarter with a beautiful drive down the lane which sent Carleton on a 9-5 run to end the first down just three.
The passed dropped significantly as both teams settled into their defence with Carleton scoring only two points in the first eight minutes of the quarter as the Gee-Gees slowly chipped away from the line for a 14-point lead.
Carleton would chip away at the Gee-Gees lead throughout the quarter but could never pull close as Ottawa continued to lead. Carleton would cut the lead as close as 9 with three minutes to play but couldn’t climb the rest of the way back as Carleton would drop a decision for the first time in 2023.
