OTTAWA - Hayden Serniuk scored a penalty shot goal midway through the second period as the Carleton Ravens beat the tenth-ranked Montreal Citadins 5-2 on Sunday evening.
Leading 2-1 in the first second period Hayden Serniuk (Burlington, Ont.) scored twice in under eighty seconds including a penalty shot goal which proved to be the eventual game winner.
Carleton scored early in the first period as Lanie Guimond (Kirkland Lake, Ont.) would deposit the rebound on a Nicole Hunter blast. The Ravens' opening lead would be short-lived as Montreal responded just 2:02 later. Only 2:31 later, Carleton would retake their lead when Abigail Byrne (Ottawa, Ont.) would put home a rebound to put Carleton up after twenty minutes.
In the second Serniuk would go to work, first drawing a penalty shot while short-handed, then, just 1:19 later, picking up a Justina Beard rebound and wrapping around the cage for a 4-1 Ravens lead.
The Citadins would come out firing to start the third, peppering Caitlin Whitehead (Ottawa, Ont.) with shots. Jade Picard would be the beneficiary of the Montreal pressure, scoring 2:33 into the third to cut the lead to two. Midway through the period, Carleton would respond again as Payton Miller's short squeezed behind Maude Desroches for the Ravens' fifth and final goal of the game.
The Ravens will now shift to training and practices for the rest of 2023 before taking the ice on January 7, 2024, at Concordia. Carleton's first home game of the new year will be on Friday, January 12 when they host McGill.
