OTTAWA - The Carleton Ravens remain undefeated in the Ravens' Nest during the 2023-24 season following an 80-40 win over the Laurentian Voyageurs on Saturday.
The Ravens and Voyageurs traded points in the first quarter with the scrappy defence of the visitors holding Carleton to 33.3% shooting and only 1 of 4 from beyond the arc. It was Kali Pocrnic (Oakville, Ont.) who hit the Ravens loan three. The starting point guard continues to show her championship form from the year before opening the game with five points an assist and a rebound in the opening frame.
Though Pocrnic led the way for Carleton early, it was more of the same for the hosts the rest of the way as Carleton's depth and defensive pressure took over. Carleton's bench was dominant at times, scoring 36 of the team's points with Tatyanna Burke, 11, and Teresa Donato, 7, leading the way. In the second, Donato and Burke combined for nine points, while all the visitors could earn were four points from the free throw line despite eight trips to the line.
Carleton was slow to get started in the third, taking some time to score points in the half before Zerina Duvnjak (Kitchener, Ont.) would put up 8 points to expand the lead to 28 after thirty minutes. With Carleton starters giving way to the bench for 30 of the final 50 minutes of playing time, Burke continued her strong offensive play while Kinly Rice (Douglas, Ont.) found a rhythm scoring 6 points in the paint.
The Ravens will now have a lighter load with only one game scheduled next weekend when they travel to Soo Sault Marie to face the Algoma Thunderbirds.
Carleton Returns home on Friday, January 26 for Shoot for the Cure before hosting Waterloo the following evening.
