OTTAWA - The Carleton Ravens are now three points back in the RSEQ playoff race following a 3-1 loss to the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Saturday night.
Coming off a difficult loss on the road Friday night, the Ravens came out ready to play on Saturday drawing a penalty in the first minute of the contest. Carleton's power play would create chances on Mahika Sarrazin early but couldn't get much going. Then just over a minute into the power play the Ravens would work the puck around the zone as Payton Miller would find Ava Beck wide-open in the slot. Beck would make no mistake beating Sarrazin high to the glove side.
The Ravens would hold their lead throughout the first period killing off one penalty while being unable to capitalize on two opportunities on the power play. The Gee-Gees best chance of the frame came on a breakaway that Caitlin Whitehead calmly turned aside.
Kate McLean would get the Gee-Gees even midway through a relatively quiet second period. Carleton managed a few changes, including a great opportunity on the power play, but the Raven's slapper rang off the post behind Sarrazin bouncing back into the slot.
Both teams traded chances early in the third before a breakthrough. Catherine Birkby would redirect a puck in the slot past Whitehead on the powerplay with less than four minutes to play. The deflection would catch the Carleton goaltender off balance, sliding to her left, to put the Gee-Gees ahead.
Carleton would look to pull their goaltender late in the frame, as a stray puck made its way back to Whitehead a miscue would see the Gee-Gees pick off the pass to put the game out of reach.
Carleton will stay at home for their next matchup, a date with the U SPORTS #1 ranked team, Concordia, next Friday night.
