OTTAWA - The Carleton Ravens were a perfect 7-for-7 on the penalty kill Friday night but it wasn't enough, falling 1-0 to the McGill Martlets in double-overtime.
The Ravens killed off three first-period penalties with Caitlin Whitehead (Ottawa, Ont.) turning aside all 13 shots she faced. Carleton would finally get a shot of their own on the power play but couldn't capitalize going 0-for-2 in the second period.
Despite their stumbles on the power play, Carleton held off the Martlets three more times carrying a scoreless tie into the third. Carleton carried more of the play in the third, but continued to be outshot, trailing the visitors 27-8 after regulation.
In the first overtime period, Whitehead would start again for the Ravens. After a turnover in the neutral zone, the Martlets would spring a player free for a breakaway but the Ravens transfer stood tall making two saves to force a second overtime.
Unfortunately for Whitehead, her heroic streak would run out at 3-on-3 when India Benoit connected with Sarah-Maude Lavoie on a long stretch pass sending Lavoie in alone. Under pressure from a backchecking Raven, Lavoie fired a quick wrister that beat Whitehead between the legs for the game-winner.
The Ravens will need to bounce back quickly from the loss at the Bishop's Gaiters will travel across town Saturday night after facing uOttawa on Friday night.
