OTTAWA (Mar. 25, 2024) - Ahead of Thursday's Varsity Banquet the Carleton Ravens have announced the nominees for the Jack Vogan Memorial Medal awarded annually to the top graduating male athlete.
Jack Vogan, or “Jake” as he was known on campus, was a popular and beloved figure on campus known for his easygoing manner and dry sense of humour. Before his untimely death within months of his Carleton graduation, he was the starting centre and co-captain of the basketball team in 1955-56. In the words of Norm Fenn, who coached Jake for two years and knew him well. “As a person and as a player, he is one of the finest individuals I have ever met in athletics.”
The award is presented annually to a male student-athlete who, through activity in Athletics, has exhibited throughout their career at Carleton University, a high and progressive standard of performance, participation and attitude, with emphasis placed on performance.
A nominee for Athlete of the Year in 2023, Ife Onyeka is a five-year Raven who recently represented the Ravens at the CFL National Combine. A two-year representative on Varsity Council, Onyeka is a Ravens leader on and off the field.
What Kieran Craig accomplished in just two seasons is truly remarkable. The assistant captain registered 48 points in 49 games while completing a degree which he began while playing major junior hockey.
A six-year member of the Nordic ski team, Colin Ward graduates with a full assortment of awards. A three-time Academic All-Canadian, Ward and the men's team won five gold medals.
In his three-year career with Carleton, Garcia earned the U SPORTS Top 8 Academic All-Canadian Award, a U SPORTS silver medal and an OUA Championship. U SPORTS First Team and Second Team All-Canadian, and three-time Academic All-Canadian, the Ravens captain also earned the Ottawa Sports Award as the city's top soccer player in 2022.
