Quebec City, Que. (Mar. 6, 2024) - Carleton Ravens star first-year Xavier Spencer has been named the 2024 winner of the Dr. Peter Mullins Trophy as U SPORTS rookie of the year.
Bursting onto the scene, the Edmonton, Alta. guard led U SPORTS in rookie points, field goals, free throws, and assists while ranking in the top ten in three-point field goals, rebounds and steals.
Spencer is the third Carleton Ravens player to earn the award, joining Canadian men's national team members Lloyd Pandi (2020) and Philip Scrubb (2011). After an incredible first year with the Ravens, a historic connection with the two players will run deep for Spencer.
Spencer finished the season three points behind Pandi for the program's first-year record while surpassing Scrubb's first-year record for assists with 72. Xavier also established new high-water marks for rookie steals with 31 recording three steals in a single-game five times.
Spencer finished the season with three of the Ravens' five best single-game performances by a rookie while playing a program-high 593 minutes.
Augustas Brazdeikis (Oakville, Ont.) joins Spencer on the U SPORTS All-Rookie team. The 6'7" forward recorded the most rebounds by a rookie in 45 years, while finishing in the top ten all-time in rookie scoring, field goals, assists, blocks and minutes played.
Brazdeikis' 16 rebounds on December 1, 2023, at McMaster, set a new program record for a first-year, a category in which he now holds five of the top ten performances.
"We've asked many of these young guys," said Ravens' head coach Taffe Charles during the season. "They've come in and played a lot of minutes. Very, very tough minutes. And they've responded well."
