OTTAWA (Sept. 1, 2024) - The Carleton Ravens women's rugby season got off to a bumpy start on Sunday afternoon as the Laval Rouge-et-Or showed their championship form early and often en route to a 71-0 victory.
The Rouge-et-Or used a series of mauls and successful breakdowns early in the first half to score in the opening six minutes. Once they had established their lead they never looked back. Despite impressive individual runs by rookie Sierra Hasse and veteran Malak Saif el Nasr the Ravens struggled to gain much field positioning as Laval trucked along, building a 35-0 halftime lead.
The Ravens improved their defensive line for big stretches of the second half, holding Laval at bay if only for a minute. Though the Ravens never backed down, Laval's depth proved to be too much for a Carleton team that saw six Ravens make their debuts.
Despite the loss, the Ravens know doubt learned key lessons that will help them next weekend when they visit Bishop's. The Ravens return home on Wednesday, September 18, when they host the Ottawa Gee-Gees.
