OTTAWA (October 26, 2024) - The Carleton Ravens men's hockey team made strides in their play this weekend but dropped their third and fourth in a row with a pair of losses at home. The Ravens looked more energized on Friday night but couldn't hold off the high power UQTR Patriotes before dominating Queen's for long stretches despite losing 5-2.
On Friday, the high-flying Pats took it to the Ravens outshooting Carleton 14-2 in the first period. With a pair of goals midway through the first, the Pats led 2-0 after 20. Carleton found their skating legs in the second and Reese Belton (Winnipeg, Man.) cut the lead in half snapping home a quick shot off a scramble draw. The Pats quickly responded with a goal on the power play and then a shorty before Carleton could stop the bleeding again.
On the power play Giovanni Morneau (Ottawa, Ont.) took a behind the net feed and quickly centred to Belton who drove home his second of the evening. The pair of tallies has Belton already halfway to his 2023-24 point total just seven games into the season.
The Pats would score in the dying minutes of the second to re-establish the three-goal lead before adding another midway through the third. The Ravens' power play continued to be a bright spot, with Nolan Seed wiring home a wrist shot from inside the top of the circle to cap off the evening's scoring. Despite the loss, the Ravens' power play built momentum for the team, going 3 for 6 on the evening.
Steven Bacovsky (Calgary, Alta.) had 34 stops in the Ravens' goal.
Despite surrendering the first goal late in the opening period, the Carleton Ravens looked back to business on Saturday night battling hard with the Queen's Gaels. The Gaels built a 2-0 lead against Carleton before James Mayotte built some momentum banking in a shot from the right wall. Mayotte's goal seemed to lift the Ravens who used a physical game plan to pepper Christian Purboo with 18 shots in the second period.
A late power play goal by Cameron Tolnai put the Gaels back up two, but Carleton responded quickly in the third when Madoka Suzuki (Kanawaga, Jap.) banged home a rebound on the power play. Dharan Cap's first goal of the season midway through the third closed the door on a Ravens comeback before Holden Katzalay finished things off into the empty net.
Carleton won't have much time to rebound, they host Concordia on Thursday night before welcoming Western for a special Sunday matinee at 2:00 PM.
