OTTAWA (Nov 3. 2024) - The Carleton Ravens men's hockey team's improved play wasn't enough over the weekend as the team dropped back-to-back decisions at home. Rebounding from a 10-1 loss at Concordia, the Ravens pushed the OUA East leading Stingers to overtime on Thursday before losing 3-2. On Sunday afternoon, the Ravens couldn't get a bounce to go their way, losing 6-2 to the Western Mustangs.
At times, Carleton carried the play on Thursday showing an increased confidence and tempo. Despite giving up a power play goal in the first, the Ravens responded early in the second period when Gio Morneau scored his second of the season. Just a couple minutes later the Ravens took the lead when rookie Félix Bédard scored his first in the OUA.
The lead was shortlived as the Stingers tied the game just 2:07 later. The tie would hold through the third and into overtime before Michael Huchette beat Steven Bacovsky for the game-winner.
Carleton looked to respond on Sunday when they scored Bédard added his second in as many gaps snapping home a wrist-shot on a 2-on-1 to open the scoring. Jack York would tie the game in the final seconds of the first when his point shot bounced past Tye Austin. Then, two goals from the Mustangs in the second put them ahead 3-1 despite being outshot 31-21 after two.
Carleton looked to battle back in the third, but found themselves behind 4-1 before Reese Belton got them on the board, picking up a puck in transition and elected to shoot on the rush.
The Ravens' comeback hopes would be dashed when Zach Power scored on a penalty shot while shorthanded in the third before Jake Gravelle hit the empty net with the Ravens on a 6-on-3 advantage. Matteo Drobac was the star for the visiting Mustangs, turning away 41 Ravens shots for the win.
"I think they just a lucky break really, the whole game was where we'd get a chance and not bury and they'd go down and score," acknowledged Mark Cavallin. "It just felt like, 'Yeah, it didn't go our way today' kind of thing."
Carleton travels down the 401 to face Queen's and RMC next weekend before returning home to host York and RMC on November 15 and 16.
