(Nov. 10, 2024) - The Carleton Ravens men's hockey team snapped a seven-game losing streak on Saturday afternoon with a 6-2 win over the RMC Paladins.
The Ravens weekend didn't start as well, with special teams playing a key factor in a 6-2 loss to Queen's, but the pesky young group responded well on Saturday afternoon.
"The team battled hard in both games," acknowledged coach Mark Cavallin. "We ran into some penalty trouble at Queen's but kept our composer on Saturday which helped us keep momentum throughout the game."
The Ravens were only 3 for 6 on the penalty kill on Friday night. Surrendering all three powerplay goals in the middle period, the Ravens saw all their momentum sapped away as the Gaels blew open a 2-1 into a 5-2 advantage.
It wasn't all bad for the Ravens on Friday, Alex Johnston (Ottawa, Ont.) scored his third of the season in the first period before rookie Félix Bédard added his third goal in as many games in the second.
On Saturday, the Ravens forced a change in their puck luck. "We knew going into the RMC game that we could not get outworked," explained Cavallin. Continuing, "we're happy with our work ethic this weekend, especially in the RMC game."
The Ravens' offence came out quick against the Paladins, as Johnston scored twice in the opening period and Bédard added his fourth in as many games. After Johnston scored two similar one-times from the slot, Bédard would steal a puck in the slot and bury it past Michael Davis for the 3-0 lead.
Gio Morneau (Ottawa, Ont.) and Bédard scored powerplay goals in the second before Morneau snuck his second of the game in just before the buzzer to extend the lead to 6-1 after two. Morneau's second was a beautiful backhand flip top corner after Nick McCarry (Calgary, Alta.) made a no-look pass to the slot. RMC would add one in the third, but couldn't overcome the deficit as Carleton came away with a 6-2 win.
Carleton will look to continue the momentum on Friday night when they host the York Lions at 6:00 PM before welcoming the RMC Paladins on Saturday night.
