OTTAWA (Nov. 3, 2024) - The Carleton Ravens continued to find their legs in the OUA over the weekend picking up one point despite two losses. Carleton opened the weekend with an overtime loss on Friday to York before falling 5-2 to the Nipissing Lakers on Saturday.
Carleton came out strong on Saturday taking a first-period lead just minutes into the contest when Emma Bradbury buried her own rebound for a 1-0 lead. Jenna Goertzen (Winnipeg, Man.) stood tall in the Ravens goal turning aside five York power plays in her first start of the season.
The Lions pushed hard, after being outshot 26-16 through two periods, and finally broke through when Isabela Huculak scored late in the third to force overtime. Julia Mumford's second penalty of the third period carried over into the extra frame but the Ravens were able to kill off the early threat only for Alexa Giantsopoulos to score moments later to take the win.
Carleton hoped to bounce back on Saturday night when #10 ranked Nipissing came to town. The Ravens and Lakers traded goals in the first period with Ravens rookie Shae Laprade scoring twice to chase Nipissing starter Rachel Lee.
Nipissing would return the favour in the second period scoring twice in the opening four minutes, the Lakers chased Goertzen from the goal. Kaitlyn Langille was greeted no better, allowing the first shot she would face before holding on to stop the next 13 as Carleton threw everything they had left at Chantelle Sandquist. Sandquist would turn aside all 27 Nipissing shots to hold on for the victory.
"Part of our gameplan was being disciplined, staying out of the box," explained coach Stacey Colarosi. With four cracks at the power play, discipline proved to be a big issue for Carleton. After going 5-5 on the penalty kill Friday, the Ravens' struggles Saturday cost them drastically. "You can't allow them to have any time and space, and we didn't manage sticks in front of the net. But, you just have to stay out of the box with that team."
