OTTAWA (Jan. 19, 2025) - Giovanni Morneau's Michigan goal highlighted a critical third period comeback on Saturday night that keeps the men's hockey teams playoff hopes strong.
After a disappointing loss on Friday night against Windsor that saw the Ravens fall behind 4-1 in the first period Saturday's rally was critical. The Ravens opened the weekend carrying the pace in the opening five minutes, but found themselves behind 3-0 when Windsor scored three times in a minute and five seconds. A goalie change seemed to settle the Ravens until Tye Austin was injured scrambling to make a diving save and left the game.
The Ravens started to chip away at the lead before the end of the period when Nick McCarry scored but the momentum would carry into the second as Max Donoso was solid in goal for the Lancers turning aside all eight Ravens shots in the frame. Carleton turned up the heat in the third, scoring twice in the opening ten minutes.
Saturday started to look like more of the same for the Ravens with Nipissing opened the scoring just 56 seconds into the contest. Carleton would show their resolve throughout the night quickly tying the game on Felix Bedards twelfth of the year.
The two teams continued to trade goals throughout the evening with Nipissing leading 4-3 going into the third. Halfway through the third Carleton would steal all the momentum when Gio Morneau picked up a loose puck in the corner and wrapped his way behind the net throwing a Michigan into the top corner.
Alex Johnston would pick up a rebound in the slot two minutes later to give the Ravens their first lead of the evening. Bedard's second of the evening, into the empty net, put things out of reach.
The Ravens penalty kill was perfect over the weekend going 4-for-4 while the power play was vital for the Ravens with a pair of goals.
Carleton remains one point outside of a playoff spot with one game in hand. Next weekend the Ravens travel to Guelph and Brock for a pair of Western division matchups.
