OTTAWA - The Carleton Ravens men's basketball team advanced to the OUA Quarterfinals with an 89-57 win over the Waterloo Warriors on Wednesday night.
The Ravens got off to a strong start building a 17-2 lead before Waterloo chipped their way into the game. First-year guard AJ Osman scored 9 points in the opening quarter while Carleton dominated the rebounds by a 14 to 3 margin.
Isaiah McRae and Rafael Llorin led the charge for Waterloo in the second combining for 15 of the team's 18 points. Despite making Carleton pay for their fouls by going 7-8 at the line, the duo couldn't do enough to cut into the lead as Daniel Smith hit a pair of threes, and the Ravens led 42-33 at the half.
The Ravens shut down Waterloo in the third forcing 6 turnovers while holding their guests to only 2 field goals. Behind balanced scoring, Carleton extended their lead to 22 heading into the fourth.
Aubrey Dorey-Havens drained a pair of threes in the fourth to cap off his game-high 22 points as the Ravens punched their ticket to face the Queen's Gaels on Saturday afternoon.
The Ravens dominated inside throughout the evening outscoring the Warriors 30-10 in the paint behind a 43-23 rebounding advantage.
"It's about results at this time of year," said head coach Taffe Charles after the game. "I'm really happy with the result and we'll get another chance on Saturday." Having played Queen's in back-to-back weeks to close out the season, the Ravens bench boss sees a benefit from the familiarity. "It's perfect, we don't have much time to prep and we just played them, so it works great. With Waterloo, we had two days to prep and we hadn't seen them since November, so that was going way back."
With Queen's fresh in their minds, the Ravens now take a deeper, healthier roster on the road looking to return to the OUA Semifinals.
