OTTAWA (Feb. 2, 2025) - The Carleton Ravens women's basketball team clinched a fourth consecutive first-round bye on Saturday night with a 72-63 win over the Queen's Gaels. The Ravens' win continued the team's 19-game win streak after beating the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks 68-53 on Friday.
On Friday night Carleton jumped out to a 24-6 lead after the first quarter before the Ridgebacks battled back in the middle quarters. Kyana-Jade Poulin led the Ravens with 7 points in the opening quarter single-handedly outscoring the Ridgebacks.
Brianna Morrison led the Ridgebacks' comeback with 13 points in the middle frames. Each team scored only a single field goal in the third, but 7 free throws was enough for the Ravens to maintain their lead and secure the win. Poulin and Morrison led all players with 18 points while Jacqueline Urban had a 13-point, 11-rebound double-double.
The Ravens out-rebounded their visitors 50-24 on Friday night, a trend that would be crucial the next evening with a long Queen's Gaels opponent coming to town.
The Gaels height would challenge the Ravens on Saturday night, outrebounding the hosts 34-33 on the night. Carleton would take some time to find a rhythm, but Dorcas Buisa (Gatineau, Que.) found a rhythm early, scoring 8 of her game-high 26 points in the opening quarter.
Trailing by one after 10 minutes, Carleton would step up in the second with 9 points from Buisa and 8 from Poulin as they outscored the Gaels 19-13 in the second.
The Gaels shot 43% in the third, relying on a trio of threes to keep pace with Carleton. Jacqueline Urban led both teams in scoring in the third with 9 points on 4-4 shooting from the field. The Ancaster guard has been red-hot since returning from the FISU 3x3 World Cup.
In the fourth, Amy Hagman had 9 points for the Gaels but it wasn't enough as Urban dropped 11 and hauled in 6 rebounds to secure the Ravens' 19th win.
The Ravens will look to extend their streak to twenty when they face the Ottawa Gee-Gees at the 2025 Colonel By Classic on Friday, February 7, 2025, at TD Place.
