In a conference with a pair of perennial national championship contenders, it's tough to stand out. But for Ravens rookie Sierra Hasse, she's getting used to being a shining star.
The Ravens rookie took the RSEQ conference by storm in 2024, earning three game MVPs and leading Carleton in scoring en route to being named the conference's Rookie of the Year. The first Raven to win the award in the program's short history, Hasse is more than just a local rising star. The St. Lazare forward is also a rising star at the international level, making great strides with Rugby Canada.
Preparing for her second international tour next month, Hasse was recently named the Ravens Rookie of the Year, joining Madeline Bartek on the winners' list of the department's newest award.
"My rookie year was phenomenal," said Hasse, speaking of her experience as a member of Ravens rugby. "It's honestly some of the best team culture and team dynamic I've ever been a part of. And, I'm really looking forward to just growing with this team."
Growing with the team won't take long for Hasse. In her first season, she was an immediate impact player, appearing in all six regular season games and the Ravens' lone playoff matchup against Ottawa. Hasse played a critical role on both sides of the ball, stepping into the role of eight and making an impact that Carleton hasn't seen from that position since Anastasia Bourka.
"She established herself as a dominant force immediately," shared Ravens head coach David Luong. "She is one of those players who has such a positive impact, both on the field and in the community."
Hasse didn't hesitate to involve herself in the broader Carleton community either. She jumped right into the opportunity to support the Junior Ravens Rugby program. Helping spread the game of rugby in Ottawa is something that she takes great pride in.
Hasse tells stories of running into the parent of a Junior Ravens participant in the city and hearing how much the program has helped them fall in love with the game. "It was just really nice to be able to give back to the community and just inspire the younger generations," she explained.
Hasse's next opportunity to grow the game comes on the pitch; in May, she and Canada U20 will face Ireland in a two-match tour. "I'm really excited to show what I've learned here and represent the leaf and my country."
Hasse and the Ravens will return to TAAG Park this fall for another season of RSEQ rugby.
