Founded in 2013-2014, the Ravens Cross Country and Track & Field programs offers Carleton University students a unique and comprehensive approach to the sports of cross country running and track and field, competing in the RSEQ conference and USports championships [https://usports.ca/en/championships/track-field/x].
The program is professionally managed by the Ottawa Lions Track & Field Club, Canada’s largest and most successful Club program. The agreement between Carleton University and the Ottawa Lions ensures that you will train in event-specific groups in an environment geared towards your development as an athlete. Ravens programming is directed by Ottawa Lions head coach Richard Johnston, who coordinates a team of national-level and international-level coaches, many of whom have either been athletes on or coached with national teams up to the Olympic level.
The program emphasis is on athlete development. Whether you come to the program as an OFSAA medalist or as an athlete who wants to see what they can do in the sport, your hard work is matched by the commitment from our coaches to maximize your performance.
A full listing of planned competitions is posted on the Ottawa Lions site in the late summer for the coming academic year. Opportunities to compete include Ottawa-based competitions as well as travel competitions in Ontario, Quebec, and the Northeast United States.

The program is based at two remarkable facilities, the renovated Terry Fox Athletic Facility at Mooney’s Bay and the Dome @ Louis-Field in Blackburn Hamlet (East Ottawa), with additional training opportunities in the Carleton University fieldhouse. Training during April to November is conducted at the Terry Fox Athletics Facility ay Mooney’s Bay, about a ten-minute bike ride from campus. Training from November to April is conducted at the DOME@ Louis-Riel Facility, which houses the only indoor 400m track in Canada. Training times are flexible with regards to your group, coach and school schedule. Athletes looking to be part of the XC/Distance group should prepare to have an open schedule for Monday and Wednesday evenings at 5, and Saturdays for training at 9am or for meets. Athletes looking to be a part of the shorter distances, field events, of combined events are able to train up to 3 of 5 times a week (Monday’s, Tuesday’s, Wednesday’s, Thursday’s, Saturdays) and should also be prepared for a wide option of meets on Saturdays in the Winter Semester.
