Beverley McAskin was a leader in the promotion of sports and an all-round sports participant during her years at Carleton, having played basketball, volleyball, and badminton, and been a cheerleader as well. She also served on the Athletics Board in 1957-58 and was instrumental in establishing the women's varsity sports program at Carleton. The extent of her participation was well recognized during her student years: she was made a member of the Honour Society and in her graduating year she was awarded the Henry Marshall Tory Award, given annually in recognition of high academic achievement and leadership within the student community.
