The late Doc Holmes was a founding member of Carleton's chemistry department and the first Chair of the Athletics Board in 1947. Yet, it is his work as a volunteer during Carleton's early years that have left a lasting impact for those who followed. He performed the duties of an athletics director until Norm Fenn was hired in 1952, handled budgeting matters, recruited coaches, secured uniforms and equipment, and arranged for playing facilities. on top of all this, he also coached junior varsity basketball and was an early believer in filming games and players' movements to assist his coaches - all without fanfare and remuneration.
