Kathy attended Carleton from 1969 to 1975 graduating with an Honours Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics. Kathy won the University Medal in Science as the top graduating student in 1975. She played for four of her five years on the women's volleyball team where she excelled as a setter and power hitter. She also played tennis her first two years. She was a member of the volleyball team that won the Ontario-Quebec Women's Conference of Intercollegiate Athletics championship in 1969/70, a first for Carleton. She also played in the historical first women's Canadian university volleyball championship tournament sponsored by the Canadian Women's Intercollegiate Athletic Union held in 1970 where Carleton placed sixth. On the home front, Carleton participated in the City League where they were champions for three consecutive years - 1969 to 1972 during Kathy's career. Kathy's teammates recognized her contributions to the team by awarding her the Alumni Trophy for Volleyball which recognizes the player that puts team before self. She received this trophy in two consecutive years - 1970/71 and 1971/72. She also received the coveted Ruth Coe Memorial Award as female athlete of the year for 1971/72.
