Kwesi Loney, the 2019 U SPORTS Coach of the Year, spent seven seasons as head coach of the Carleton Ravens men's soccer program. In May of 2023 Loney was named the new Director of High Performance Sport for the Department of Recreation and Athletics.
He remains the interim head coach of the men's soccer program until the position is filled.
Loney was named OUA East Coach of the Year for the 2017, 2018 and 2019 seasons. Loney's teams never missed the playoffs during his tenure as head coach.
Most recently, Kwesi led the Ravens to a silver medal performance in the 2021 U SPORTS National Championship hosted at The Ravens' Perch, Keith Harris Stadium at Carleton University. Loney's Ravens fought valiantly winning games in penalty kicks and a shootout to advance to the championship game before falling in kicks to the University of Montreal.
In 2019 the Ravens came off a best ever finish under Loney, ending 2018 with a U SPORTS national bronze medal, following up a national 6th place finish in 2017. In his first season as leader of the Ravens in 2016, Loney led Carleton to a 10-2-4 regular season for the third best mark in the OUA East division. Carleton would go 1-1 in the postseason, with their season ending at Toronto in the conference quarterfinals.
With a highly-touted rookie class entering the fold in 2017, Loney led the Ravens to a 13-1-2 finish, setting numerous 16-game regular season program records for wins (13), points (41), goals (59) and goals against (10). Carleton captured an OUA silver medal and would go on to finish sixth at nationals after going 1-2 at the championships held at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, BC.
Coach Loney joined the Ravens as an assistant with the men’s soccer program in 2010. He spent six years working under veteran skipper Sandy Mackie before his appointment as head coach on June 28, 2016. He became the sixth coach in program history.
Loney graduated from Carleton University with Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in 2002. During this time, he was a member of the men’s soccer program for five years, and captained the team for three. Playing under coach Mackie, Loney was a recipient of the Doug Banton Memorial Award for dedication to the team in 2000. He was fortunate to attend two national championships, earning a silver medal in his final year of play, while also being selected as an All-Canadian and national tournament all-star. Loney was selected in his final year to represent Canada at the University Games in South Korea.
After his time as a Raven, Loney joined the Semi Pro Ottawa Wizards of the CPSL, playing one season. He continued his play with the Ottawa Royals, winning the Ontario Cup and earning the silver medal at the national final in PEI. He played one season with the Ottawa Fury in the PDL league and completed the season with Ottawa St. Anthony’s winning the Ontario Cup, CPSL Cup and a National Championship in Surrey, BC.
He is a nationally licensed coach with years of experience that has included head coach of Algonquin College men’s soccer (2009), assistant coach of the Ottawa Fury women’s W-League team (2010-2012), and youth head coach of the Ottawa Fury Soccer Club (2004-2009).
Kwesi Loney is also an assistant coach on the Technical Staff of Atlético Ottawa (CPL).
